How to Build a Tile Shelf



Tile shelves are very interesting to look at and are fairly heavy duty. Building the tile shelf is an easy and fun task that can be completed in a single day. These shelves can add a touch of class and beauty to a home and can be designed to complement any number of décor styles. These shelves also carry with them the honor of being hand made. While it is possible to purchase tile shelving units, the average tile shelf is homemade by the owners of the home. This makes it a worthy piece of furniture to pass down to future generations as well as a piece that carries with it the memories of being built.



To begin to build a tile shelf, first select the type of shelf you wish to have in your home. Most tile shelves are built in shelving units that can be found in the kitchen. However, the single shelf can be used as well as the stand alone book shelf. If the shelving unit was originally metal, you may need to lay down wood to cover the grating system and provide the adhesive with a solid material to adhere to. If this is the case, measure the inside of the shelving unit and cut plywood to cover it. This can be attached either by inserting small bolts or by using a caulking adhesive.

Record Shelving

Find the appropriate sized tiles for the shelving unit. In the case of a mosaic tile shelf, find many little pieces of tile that can be used to develop a design. It is best if the tiles are not the large variety, but rather are the smallest ones available. This will help to keep your tile shelf balanced astatically. The large tiles will simply be too overbearing on the shelf and may not deliver the pleasing appearance that you had in mind when taking on the tile project. Lay the tiles out how you want them to appear.
